Tonight, I attended a world-wide broadcast of the General Women's meeting of my church.
Traditionally, this meeting is different because there are several organizations in the church that are for (using the following word loosely) women. For young girls 3-12, there's a children's Primary Program, for young women ages 12-18, there is a program called Young Women's. For all adult women, there's another program called Relief Society. They all are designed to help members of the program grow and develop spiritually according to their age and or stage in life.
I've been in all three of these programs as I've grown older and each one holds a special place my heart and reminds me of fond memories.
In addition to the general conferences held every six months for all members of our church (which will be held next weekend), there are other general, world-wide meetings. In the past, the adult women had a meeting called General Relief Society meeting and the Young Women had a meeting for themselves and their mothers called General Young Women meeting.
Now they are combined and young girls as young as eight are all invited to attend a General Women meeting. This has never happened since the church was established in 1830...until today!
It was special to be united with women of so many ages. The meeting was held at the Conference Center in Salt Lake City, Utah, but sent through satellite to other congregations all over the world-thankfully, including the BYU-Idaho center in Rexburg, Idaho. :)
There was a marvelous women's choir of women ages 8 to 80. I loved their music.
Overall, I felt excited, honored and humbled to be a part of such an historical event that had so much positive and spiritual energy. It was encouraging, strengthening and enlightening as leaders talked about how we can live happily as we fulfill our spiritual role as women to emulate the Savior using our divine gifts and talents.
